On Earth, the battered Megatron visits the recuperating Optimus Prime following his disasterous encounter against Lord Jhiaxus. After a brief tussle with Grimlock, Megatron proposes an alliance to stop the new generation of Transformers, and Optimus quickly agrees.

Sideswipe then enters with bad news -- a group of invaders is attacking Ethos, a planet in a neighboring system, and the natives need help. While Optimus organizes an Autobot rescue force, Megatron dismisses it as a superfluous task and keeps his Decepticons on Earth.

After the Autobots have left, Starscream suggests that the Decepticons take advantage of the situation to resume their rampage of Earth. Megatron tersely dismisses the idea, which further steels Starscream's resolve to overthrow him.

Lord Jhiaxus, tired of trying to ignore the Autobots, launches an all-out effort to destroy them. Since he does not know where they are, he orders his forces on a massive campaign of genocide throughout the galaxy, destroying all non-Transformers life they find. Jhiaxus' reasoning is that such an act would draw the Autobots out of hiding, whereupon he can crush them once and for all.

On the planet Ethos, a Decepticon strike team is murdering the citizens and destroying their accomplishments with impassive efficiency. The Autobots arrive and challenge them, though Optimus Prime is horrified by their amoral indifference. And though the Autobots manage to push back the Decepticons, it is not fast enough -- reinforcments are surely on the way already, and once they arrive, the Autobots will be overwhelmed.

Suddenly, reinforcements do arrive -- from Megatron. With their numbers and unrestrained fighting skills, Megatron's Decepticons bolster the Autobot forces, and soon all of the next-generation Decepticons are destroyed. Optimus' relief is overshadowed by the realization that the Autobots may have to descend to Megatron's levels if they hope to have any chance of success against Jhiaxus.

Later, Optimus and Megatron confer on the Warworld. Though Megatron insists that he joined the attack just to strike back at Jhiaxus' forces, Optimus is buoyed at how Autobots and Decepticons can work together after the destruction of Unicron (in issue #75 of the original series). Optimus briefly considers telling Megatron about his premonitions of a second, more menacing threat, but decides to keep quiet and not risk breaking the alliance.

Soundwave then interrupts with disturbing news: Starscream has disappeared.
